Philippines crack down on online gambling firms

Philippines online gambling firms that are currently operating in the country’s state-sponsored economic zones are no longer welcome to stay. Authorities of the country have banned online gambling companies from operating in the accredited sites of the country.

This decision was taken following the meeting between The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) association.

PEZA Director General Charito Plaza issued an advisory to building owners stating that new leases from iGaming operators should not be accepted and no rental contracts with current tenants involved in this business must be renewed.

“After meeting with the PEZA board and the BPO association, we reached a consensus that we will not allow because first, gambling is not a mandate of PEZA. Second, allowing it might affect operations of our legitimate BPO locators” commented Plaza.

According to Plaza, there are more than 100 gambling related business renting PEZA workspaces. Even though all of the tenants are holding iGaming licenses issued by the Philippines Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), they are no longer welcome in the economic zones or PEZA facilities.

It is not recommended to force tenants out immediately however, once the leases expire the firms will have to move out. PEZA also confirmed that engaging in technical support for online gaming firms is not allowed as well.

“Since PEZA board will not allow online gaming, they (building owners) should stop allowing the lessee to occupy the accredited buildings. We do not want to ruin the image of the legitimate BPOs locating in our sites,” said Plaza.
